Work Begins on Three Semiconductor Projects Worth ₹1.25 Lakh Crore Across India
India has entered a new era of advanced technology manufacturing with the launch of three major semiconductor projects worth nearly ₹1.25 lakh crore.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the projects through a virtual ceremony, calling the moment “a historic leap toward a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.”
The three projects represent India’s largest-ever investment in the semiconductor sector and include:
Tata Semiconductor Fab at Dholera, Gujarat –
A large-scale semiconductor fabrication facility being built by Tata Electronics in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) of Taiwan.
The fab, with an estimated investment of ₹91,000 crore, will manufacture advanced logic chips and power semiconductors. Construction has already started, and the first chip rollout is expected by end of 2026.
Tata OSAT Facility at Morigaon, Assam –
An Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Testing (OSAT) plant that will assemble and package semiconductor chips.
The investment for this project is around ₹27,000 crore, creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the Northeast.
CG Power Semiconductor Plant at Sanand, Gujarat –
A third major project led by CG Power & Industrial Solutions, supported by global technology partners.
This unit will focus on chip assembly, testing, and packaging (ATP) with an investment of about ₹7,500 crore.
Together, these projects will strengthen India’s position in the global electronics supply chain, reduce import dependency, and support industries like automotive, telecom, renewable energy, and defence.
Prime Minister Modi stated that India is not just building factories — it is “building the future of technology.” He added that the semiconductor ecosystem will empower local talent, attract global companies, and generate thousands of high-value jobs.
Industry experts said the simultaneous launch of three projects demonstrates India’s growing readiness to compete in global chip manufacturing. Dholera and Sanand in Gujarat are emerging as semiconductor hubs due to their infrastructure and connectivity, while Assam’s inclusion reflects balanced regional development.
These projects are expected to catalyze further investments in supporting sectors such as chemical supply, specialty gases, precision machinery, and logistics.
